Butterflies in October 2026 - 3 lifers (Two rare ones & one uncommon)

The Northeastern Monsoon has arrived and it is reportedly to get worse in November and December. I was lucky to get three lifers this month.

Lifer # 1

Marbled Mapwing

Cyretis cocles earli (Distant, 1883)

Very skittish and was very lucky to get this shot.

Marbled Mapwing

Cyretis cocles earli (Distant, 1883)

A typical behavior from a Mapwing species - taking cover under the leaf !

Lifer # 2

Golden Birdwing

Troides aeacus malaiianus

This is a male and is reportedly rarer than the female.

Golden Birdwing

Troides aeacus malaiianus

I just had these two shots. Very lucky indeed cause it didn't stop for too long.

Lifer #3

Plain Palm Dart

Cephrenes acalle niasicus

I had a hard time trying to identify it but eventually discover that it's a female. I think the male would have been even more difficult to distinguish from other Darts. This skipper is reportedly rare and the photo was taken from FRIM!

Plain Palm Dart

Cephrenes acalle niasicus

Either her proboscis is short or the nectar is deep inside the trunk.

Plain Palm Dart

Cephrenes acalle niasicus

I think the flowers are those of Pinwheel Flower (Tabernaemontana divaricata).

Tree Flitter

Hyarotis adrastus praba

An uncommon or maybe moderately rare skipper. This is a female.

Malayan Birdwing

Troides amphrysus ruficollis

These flowers are quite common in the jungle and often frequented by many Birdwings species as I have observed.

Malayan Birdwing

Troides amphrysus ruficollis

Naturally this is a female.

Red-tailed Marquis

Bassarona recta monilis

If you follow Yutaka profiling, this one is also named as Euthalia monilis monilis. I think there are not many photos out there which show the two red spots on its FW like those seen in a Red-spot Duke (Dophla evelina compta). This Marquis is rarer than the Banded Marquis (Bassarona teuta).

Purplish-gray Darter

Salanoemia fuscicornis

Another rare skipper but I have seen it twice within a few weeks.

Purplish-gray Darter

Salanoemia fuscicornis

This one was seen in Perak while the first one was seen in KL last month.

Dubious Flitter

Quedera monteithi monteithi

A tiny skipper.

 Red Helen

Papilio helenus helenus

A pristine looking one of which photo deserved as a keeper.

Spotted Zebra

Graphium megarus megapenthes

A localised species.

Spotted Zebra

Graphium megarus megapenthes

Its markings look bluish here.

Lesser Zebra

Graphium macareus perakensis

Slightly larger than the above Zebra but it's also a localised species.

Malayan Four-line Blue

Nacaduba pendleburyi pendleburyi

Maybe this one is quite common only in some places.

Brown Brownie

Miletus gaesa gaesa

A fast flying Brownie which likes to frequent in the dark corners of the forest trails.

                       Common Albatross

Appias albina albina

Very happy to see them both together - male (left) & female (right).

Orchid Tit

Chliaria othona semanga

If you follow Yutaka nomenclature, this Orchid is now named as Hypolycaena tora semanga.

Burmese Caerulean

 Jamides philatus subditus

So glad to see it again cause the last time was way back in 2022.

Here's a tough one. Always happy to see a Jester but this happens to be the toughest subspecies to identify among all other Jesters.

Malayan Jester

Symbrenthia hippoclus selangorana

At the moment, I guess it could be a Malayan.

Malayan Jester

Symbrenthia hippoclus selangorana

It appears to have both features of a Common Jester and a Malayan Jester. 😟

 Little Mapwing

Cyrestis themire themire

Very rarely you will see them on the ground.

Little Mapwing

Cyrestis themire themire

Male or female or perhaps a variation?

Little Mapwing

Cyrestis themire themire

They must be quite hungry.

THAT'S ALL FOLKS !
